In Thailand, research reveals that patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in lower income quintiles are more likely to experience catastrophic health expenditure on Hemodialysis (HD) than for Peritoneal Dialysis (PD). Despite this, HD is still prevalent compared with PD, which may reflect an information gap during the decision-making process.
This project aims to encourage ESKD patients to make more informed decisions by developing an out-of-pocket cost estimation tool to be used as part of the shared decision-making process between patients, caregivers, and medical professionals when choosing their treatment pathway.
Short term: The tool is incorporated into routine patient consulting practices
Long term: The tool helps reduce the risk of catastrophic health spending for numerous ESKD patients
